About Our Surface Finishes:
Surface finishes - Natural finishes have been applied throughout the millennias of man. Some of the earliest natural paints are over 30,000 years, cave paintings, and they are still on the wall. Utilizing natural materials we are able to come up with a variety of finishes and paints that are durable, beautiful, long lasting, and safe for one's health and the environment. Through research, experimentation and collaboration with artisans and craftsman Natural Paint Works is able to improve upon natural finshes and paints. Imagination is the only limiting factor.
Our finishes and paints are healthy for both people and the environment. Our paints and finishes don't contain harmful chemicals like conventional building materials. Conventional paints can off-gas for years putting one's health at risk, especially young people. Our materials are safe to be around all the time. When the job is done excess materials can be composted, reused and recycled. We strive to respect the environment and the ideals of sustainability in our products and our process.
We care - We care about our world, our environment, and our community. We create with our hands, a direct connection between raw materials and a finished product. Our work shows our dedication, care and creative process.
Finishes Offered:
We create paints and finishes appropriate to there location and desired purpose. Every project is unique. Through consultation with the clients we come up with colors and applications that are one of a kind. We have over 22 different pigments to chose from so the possibility of coloration is only limited by one's imagination.
Clay paints- Some of the oldest paints in the world are clay paints. They are breathable long lasting interior paints. Clay paints are comprised of a clay base, a binder and pigments.
Simple and well covering these paints provide a soft feel to any room. They are more resistant to mold because of their ability to breath. These paints can be applied to many different surfaces.
Milk Paints- Originating in Europe these paints have been used for centuries. They are durable and long lasting. Milk paints are comprised of milk, lime, and pigment. The Casein in the milk reacts with the Calcium in the lime to produce a chemical known as calcium caseinate, which acts as a strong binder. These paints tend to be more alkaline which is good for keeping mold from growing on them. These paints can be applied to many different surfaces.
Lime washes and paints- Lime paints and washes are long lasting finishes the provide and olde world style feel. They can be applied to wood and masonry surfaces, concrete, brick and stone. These finishes are very resistant to mold and mildew.
Glazes and Sealers- There are a variety of glazes and seals that can be made and applied to these paints. They add durability, water resistance, and creative color schemes.
Costs-
Gallon for Gallon most of these paints and finishes are equal to or less than the cost of a conventional gallon of paint. Color choice can effect price as various pigments can be more expensive than others, generally blues and greens. What one has to take into account is the associated costs of these paints versus conventional paints. Conventional paints such as latex have high associated costs. Take for example the production of latex paint, for every gallon produced there can be up to 4 gallons of waste products which are toxic to the environment and people. Add the costs of fuel to transport it and the costs begin to outweigh the benefits. Associated health costs are high as well. Conventional paints even those with low to zero voc's still off gas other toxic chemicals for up to two years. VOC's from paints are in the top 5 of the largest greenhouse gas producers. Our paints are not without there associated costs. They however are much lower when one looks at their effect on people and the environment. Our waste doesn't have to go to a hazardous waste dump. We don't have to wear respirators to work with our paints and finishes. One can move in the next day after we paint and not breath harmful fumes. We try to get our raw materials from local businesses as much as possible keeping transport costs down and decreasing our need for oil. We also try to site source materials if possible. We try to look at the whole cost picture not just the price tag at the hardware store.
